"Cut" By Slyvia Plath
"Cut" is a poem written by Sylvia Plath. In this poem Plath describes of how a lady has cut her thumb in the kitchen and describes the lady’s reactions to this accident. In the poem this lady goes through many changes in her mood, from an excitement and thrilled mood in the beginning to a mood of self hate at the end. The poem clearly describes that this lady is not any ordinary lady as she seems to be a bit unusual.
In this poem there were many techniques used to describe the lady’s feelings to the accident. Near the beginning of the poem after the lady has cut her thumb Plath uses the simile “ A flap like a hat” to create a picture of the readers head of how the thumb looks with the skin only just attached on to the thumb. This simile is really effective as it creates a very vivid picture of the thumb after it has been cut. Another technique used in this poem was a metaphor. In the middle of the poem Plath uses the metaphor “ A million soldiers run, redcoats everyone”. This metaphor also creates a vivid picture in the readers head of the amount of blood that has poured out the lady’s thumb. In this metaphor Plath refers the blood as redcoats and describes that there is a million of them which clearly shows that this lady is bleeding really bad.
This poem is also very strange due to the fact that the mood in this poem changes three times. In the beginning of the poem Plath describes the lady as being very excited and thrilled by saying “ Clutching my bottle of pink fizz, a celebration this is”. This quote shows that the lady thinks the cutting of her thumb is a good thing and that it should be celebrated, by referring the bottle of pink fizz to champagne. Then in the middle of the poem her mood changes to a faint and dull feeling by saying “papery feeling”. This quote shows that she is not feeling well and that she is starting to feel ill form the cut. Then at the end of the poem the lady’s mood changes again, but this time she feels a mood of self hate by saying “dirty girl”. This quote is saying that she hates herself for cutting her thumb and she is disgraced by herself.
Overall I thought this poem was very different and strange but in a good way because it describes a lot of things. It was interesting to see that she changes her mood three times and also interesting to see her reactions to the cutting of her thumb. I also thought that this poem was well written with the use of a lot of similes and metaphors to create vivid pictures of the lady’s thumb. I thought this allowed the reader to understand the poem better. Overall I thought this poem was very different and strange but it was also very effective and very interesting.
