Describe
The movie “slum dog millionaire” was directed by Danny Boyle and in this movie there is one important conflict between Jamal Malick and Prem Kumar. The conflict in this movie is helped with various techniques. One of the main techniques was cinematography the second was dialogue and the last one was music. These tenuous helped me to get a better understanding of the conflict between Jamal and prem and also give me a better understanding the main idea which was love conquers all.
In this film there has only been one person that has ever become a millionaire overnight and that is prem the game show host on “who wants to be a millionaire”. when prem sees Jamal is about to win and accomplish what he has, he becomes very jealous and selfish as he doesn’t want to give up this achievement. In this film cinematography helped us to show this conflict between these two people and an example of this was when there was an Ariel view shot of prem and Jamal sitting on their seats. This shot gave an image of a dueling arena as they were sitting face to face looking at each other inside the glass circle and only they were inside of it. It also looked as they were fighting each other inside that arena with the placement of their chairs face to face. Another example of the conflict shown by cinematography was when there was a mid shot of when prem and jamal were sitting next to each other. This shot showed an image of them facing of against each other as it looked like they were looking at each other. This showed us the tension between the two and how intense it was for both of them as they were eye to eye and were opposite of each other. The last example of cinematography used to show conflict in this film was when there was a over the shoulder shot of prem and jamal from behind their backs and this showed the power balance and it showed that they were stepping into the arena together.
Another technique used in this film to show conflict between prem and jamal was the dialogue . In this movie an example of the dialogue was by the way prem talks and his personality. In this movie prem is a very arrogant, selfish and unfriendly person. When prem talks in this movie he is constantly talking sarcastically trying to make jamal seem like a joke so that he gets intimidated. An example is when Prem calls Jamal a “chiwalla”. on the other hand jamal is completely different to prem as jamal is a very honest , loyal and friendly person. When he talks to prem he tries to just give him short answers like “yes” ,“no” and “I don’t know”. this shows the type of personality jamal has as it is a very peaceful minded one and doesn’t like to get into may detail. It also shows how determined Jamal is to try and not get prem stuck in his head and to think about Latika.
There is also the contribution on the music that helps to give the idea of the conflict between jamal and prem from the opening scene there is the music of the “who wants to be a millionaire” theme song which creates an idea of the game show . There is also the sound of the ticking which creates suspense and pressure of it. There is also the clapping in the scene where jamal and prem are going to sit on their seats. This creates the dramaticness in the game show and both of them are going to battle it out with the audience cheering them on. The music creates tension in the movie between prem and jamal. The tick tock sound in the beginning creates real tension for jamal who has to answer the questions. The applause in the begging scene also helps to show the tension as well as the conflict, as the applause creates a dramatic atmosphere in the room between the two.

Explain
This conflict between Jamal and Prem helped me to understand what Jamal had to overcome because when jamal would answer a question on the game show he would have a flash back of his childhood living in the slums. During these flash backs it showed many problems jamal had faced when he was a child living on his own with his brother and Latika. An example of one of the problems he faced was losing his mum in the Hindu/Muslim raid over his families village. This flash back of Jamal’s past showed one of the many problems that he had faced. It was also because of this conflict between Jamal and prem that we got to see these problems that Jamal had faced , because if jamal hadn’t been on the game show to be asked those questions he wouldn’t of had the flash backs of his past to answer them.
This conflict between Jamal and Prem also helped me to understand the love that Jamal has towards Latika. This was done by the flashbacks which showed the problems he faced when he was younger. In most of these flashbacks of his child hood he would be with latika as they would roam around the slums together with Salem. The flashbacks showed how much he loved her as when he lost her all you could see Jamal do was to look for her. This search for Latika went as far as being on the game show “who wants to be a millionaire” as Jamal was certain that Lakita would be watching the show as it was her favourite tv programmed. An example of this was when Jamal said “ I knew you would be watching”. These examples show how the conflict between Jamal and prem showed the main idea that love conquers all with the love for latika overcoming all the odds against Jamal.
